a brief excerpt of the sermon given by Pastor Alexander Thomas
during the Watch Night Service on Friday, December 31st, 2004 at
the International Church, Atlanta, Georgia.
New Year 2005 message was taken from Romans 8:31
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who
can be against us?
God has acted for the believer, not
against him. This is the greatest truth in all the world. God
did not have to act for man, but He did. God loves every man, no
matter his condition or sin and shame. Therefore, believers can
rest assured that nothing, absolutely nothing shall ever
separate them from the plan and purpose of God. God's love is
absolute. It is perfect. And God shall have His perfect love
expressed by completing His perfect plan and purpose for each
life. The believer can have absolute assurance that God will
work all things out for his good, even things that fail and are
painful to the heart. God shall deliver the believer from the
struggling and suffering of this world. The true believer shall
be conformed to the image of Christ and glorified with Him.
WE KNOW THAT GOD IS FOR US BECAUSE HE HAS GIVEN US
This is brought before us in verses 3 and
32. What more could God do than send His own Son into this world
to be our Saviour? We are told in verse 32 that with the gift of
His Son, God guarantees also to give us all things.
WE KNOW THAT GOD IS FOR US BECAUSE HE HAS SETTLED THE
QUESTION OF OUR SIN
This is brought before us in
verses 1-3 and 33-34 where we are told that through the gift,
the sacrifice, the resurrection and the present intercession of
our Lord Jesus Christ, the whole question of our sin has been
settled once and for all by Him. God has justified once and for
WE KNOW THAT GOD IS FOR US BECAUSE HE HAS
GIVEN US HIS SPIRIT
The Person of the Holy Spirit is
mentioned twenty times in this chapter. Let us notice a few of
the references to the fact of God having given us His Spirit and
to His purpose in doing so:—
He has come to indwell us—verse
He indwells us to impart life—verse 10.
indwelling guarantees our resurrection—verses 11 and 23.
WE KNOW THAT GOD IS FOR US BECAUSE HE HAS MADE US
JOINT-HEIRS WITH HIS SON
This is brought before us
in verses 14-17. The word "adoption" means "placing as a son,"
and this is exactly what God has done. God has brought us into
His family circle. But more than all this, verse 17 tells us
that we are not only children but we are actually heirs of God
and joint-heirs with Jesus Christ.
things,” if we simply rejoice, with Paul, saying, “God is for
me, who is against me? ”I know,” said Spurgeon, “that God chose
me before I was born’ for He never would have chosen me
afterwards!” Do you ever think that because you aren't good
enough for God, he will not save you? Do you ever feel as if
salvation is for everyone else but you? Then these verses are
especially for you. If God gave his Son for you, he isn't going
to hold back the gift of salvation! If Christ gave his life for
you, he isn't going to turn around and condemn you! He will not
withhold anything you need to live for him. The book of Romans
is more than an explanation of God's redeeming grace—it is a
letter of comfort and confidence addressed to you.
